Practical Ways to Use Baking Soda
Baking soda is one of those things that’s in the kitchen cupboard but doesn’t get nearly enough credit. Sure, it helps baked goods rise, but this humble powder has a whole lineup of uses that go way beyond baking. If you’re into practical, old-school remedies that actually work, baking soda could very well be your new best friend. Let me walk you through five of my favorite ways to use it around the house and for minor health issues.
Heartburn and Indigestion
Ever had that burning feeling creep up after a big meal? Baking soda can help. It’s a natural antacid that neutralizes stomach acid in no time. Just mix 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda into 4 ounces of water, stir it up, and sip it slowly. You’ll feel relief pretty quick. Just don’t overdo it- stick to no more than 7 doses in 24 hours, and don’t make it a daily habit. It’s a quick fix, not a long-term solution.
Itchy Skin or Bug Bites
Whether it’s a mosquito bite or a run-in with poison ivy, baking soda can take the sting out. Make a paste with 1 tablespoon of baking soda and a bit of water, then dab it on the itchy spot. Leave it for about 10-15 minutes, then rinse off. Got a bigger problem, like a rash or sunburn? Toss 1/2 cup of baking soda into a lukewarm bath and soak for 15-20 minutes. Trust me it works-
Teeth
Want a quick, natural way to polish up your teeth? Baking soda’s got you covered. It’s a gentle abrasive that scrubs away surface stains without all the chemicals. Mix 1/2 teaspoon with a few drops of water to make a paste, and brush for 1-2 minutes. Rinse well, and voilà- a clean, brighter smile. Just keep it to 2-3 times a week so you don’t overdo it on your enamel.
Foot Oder and Athlete’s Foot
Nobody wants stinky feet, but let’s face it, it happens. Baking soda can neutralize odors and even help with fungus. Dissolve 2 tablespoons in a basin of warm water and soak your feet for 15-20 minutes. Do it daily if you need to. Bonus tip: Sprinkle dry baking soda in your shoes overnight- it’ll soak up moisture and keep em' fresh.
Sore Throat or Canker Sores
Got a scratchy throat or a canker sore? Baking soda can help with that too. Mix 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda and 1/4 teaspoon of salt into 8 ounces of warm water. Gargle it for 30 seconds, spit it out, and repeat a couple of times a day. It works because it reduces acidity and helps create an environment that bacteria have a hard time livin' in.
Things to keep in mind
Like anything, baking soda isn’t a cure-all. If you’ve got kidney issues, high blood pressure, or need to watch your sodium intake, check with your doctor first. And always patch test when using it on your skin-just to be safe. (Refer to my patch test blog)
At the end of the day, baking soda is one of those practical home remedies that belong in every home. It’s affordable, easy to use, and works for so many little everyday issues.
Next time you’ve got an itch, a sore throat, or just need to freshen up, give it a try. Relief could be in the kitchen cupboard the next time you need it.-jb
